Catherine Popper
I play the upright and electric bass. My upright is your basic 150 year old canoe and I play a 1966 P Bass and a 1967 Guild Starfire hollowbody. I've been in NYC for about 15 years and have had a blast playing/recording/touring with bucketfulls of folks including: Hem, Ryan Adams and the Cardinals, Duke Ellington Big Band, Willie Nelson, Victoria Williams, Michael Stipe, James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins), Dr. John, Rachael Yamagata, Maxene Andrews (Andrews Sisters), Levon Helm, Norah Jones, Jennifer Glass, Rhett Miller, Rene Lopez, Jim Campilongo, Leona Naess, Tony Scherr, Garth Hudson, Joseph Arthur, Luke Doucet, and The Peter Rowan/Tony Rice Quartet
I studied classical upright bass since I was 9, then played in orchestras while spending my teens listening to the punk rock in high school at the North Carolina School of the Arts. I went to Manhattan School of Music for a jazz degree and have since enjoyed the country, alt-rock, bluegrass, klezmer and singer-songwriter scenes in NYC. I've written a big-band arrangement or two and a horn arrangement or two, but have also kept my music school background to myself to avoid being called a nerd. Pretty much I like to play the bass and laugh a lot.
